The law sets clear formulas by dismissal type. Here's the step-by-step breakdown.

Weekly Pay Cap

The calculation uses your gross weekly pay, capped at the statutory limit (£751 for 2026).

Age Bands

You accrue 0.5 weeks' pay per year under age 22; 1 week's pay per year between ages 22 and 40; and 1.5 weeks' pay per year for age 41 and older.

Length of Service

Only full years count, up to a maximum of 20 continuous years. You must have at least 2 years to qualify.

Tax Exemption

Statutory redundancy pay is completely tax-free up to £30,000.

Redundancy pay

Do I get redundancy pay if I am fired or resign?
No. Statutory redundancy pay only applies if you are dismissed because of redundancy (e.g., your role is eliminated or the workplace closes). It does not apply to resignation or dismissal for misconduct.
What if my employment contract promises more?
Many employers offer 'enhanced' redundancy pay. You will receive either the enhanced amount or the statutory amount, whichever is higher. You cannot legally receive less than the statutory minimum.
Does this apply to the US or other countries?
No. This calculator is strictly for the United Kingdom. The United States has no general federal requirement for severance pay (with limited exceptions like the WARN Act, which requires 60 days' notice or pay for mass layoffs).
